Identity verification for organisations
Organisations that must confirm a person's identity check it against the National Identity Register through the authority's verification platform.
Checking the card by eye is no longer enough
Since 9 June 2026, identity must be verified in real time with the holder's biometrics. Organisations must not photocopy, scan or keep copies of a Ghana Card to verify identity, unless the law allows it. Read the announcement.
When a Ghana Card must be used
The National Identity Register Regulations require the card wherever identification is needed for:
- applying for a passport or a driver's licence
- opening a personal bank account
- buying an insurance policy
- buying, transferring or registering land
- pensions, social security and the National Health Insurance Scheme
- consumer credit
