About the authority
The National Identification Authority was set up by the National Identification Authority Act, 2006 (Act 707) to create, maintain and promote the use of national identity cards, known as Ghana Cards.
Our mandate
The authority collects the personal data of Ghanaians in Ghana and abroad, and of foreign nationals who live in Ghana permanently, and issues each of them a Ghana Card. It keeps that data accurate, confidential and secure, and makes it available to the people and organisations the law allows.
Vision and mission
- Vision
- A robust national identification system that fosters a trusted society through digitalisation, for the economic, political and social development of Ghana.
- Mission
- To deliver exceptional identity services through a digitalised ecosystem, for safety, security, good governance and development in a trusted Ghanaian society.
The National Identification System
The system does five things:
- creates a unique identity for each person from fingerprints, irises and the face
- gives each person a personal identification number that stays with them for life
- issues Ghana Cards to everyone eligible, from birth
- keeps accurate personal information on Ghanaians at home and abroad, and on foreign nationals resident in Ghana
- confirms the identity of a person who holds a Ghana Card
