Health and Biomedical Sciences Department
Develops policy on health and biomedical technologies, and promotes inventions that meet local needs. It supervises science programmes at NITR in Kaduna, NNMDA in Lagos, and NiCFoST.

What the department does
- Develops and reviews policies on health and biomedical technologies
- Works with local and international bodies on nutrition, food safety and food security
- Builds capacity in health and biomedical technologies
- Works with the private sector and research institutions to develop and use indigenous health technologies
- Coordinates and evaluates research in health and biomedical technologies in institutions the ministry supervises
Programmes
- Better planting materials grown with temporary immersion bioreactors, for food security
- Testing and preserving beans and grains, and training on the safe use of pesticides
- Developing and testing herbal remedies for epilepsy, malaria, sickle cell anaemia and trypanosomiasis
- Reducing post-harvest losses in fruits and vegetables
- Labour-saving technologies that reduce women's workload, in the six geopolitical zones
- Research on under-used, highly nutritious foods
- Research on herbal medicine use among urban residents
- A social innovation in health initiative for vulnerable communities
- Small grants to standardise local recipes and portion sizes
- Herbal antidotes for snake bites
