Mandate and vision
The ministry was established in 1980 to use science, technology and innovation for Nigeria's economic and social development. It works with research institutes, its agencies and other parts of government.

Why the ministry exists
The National Science, Technology and Innovation Policy of 2022 makes the ministry the platform where federal agencies and state ministries work together on science, technology and innovation. It promotes research and new technology in every sector of the economy, for inclusive growth, national security, agriculture, infrastructure and industry.
Mandate
- To promote science and technology in Nigeria, under chapter 2, section 18(2) of the 1999 Constitution.
- To establish research institutes, with the President's approval, under the National Science and Technology Act of 1980.
- To be the platform for collaboration between federal agencies and state ministries on science, technology and innovation, under the 2022 policy.
- To work as a service ministry with every relevant agency, so the results of research are applied across the economy: industry, agriculture, health, energy, the environment, security, youth and women's empowerment, and more.

Leadership
