Renewable and Conventional Energy Technology Department
Promotes and coordinates research and development for better generation, transmission, distribution and use of energy, in ways that protect the environment. It works with other ministries, the private sector and international bodies on nuclear, renewable and conventional energy.

What the department does
- Develops energy policies with other ministries and the private sector, consistent with the National Energy Policy
- Sets priorities for energy research, including nuclear, oil and gas, and tar sands
- Supervises the ministry's energy research institutions
- Plans how renewable energy joins the energy mix, and its use to transform rural communities
- Develops capability in solar, wind, biofuel and hydro energy, and in locally made power equipment
- Works with the International Atomic Energy Agency on nuclear power and the use of radioactive agents
- Promotes clean coal technology
- Keeps a record of energy statistics and economics
- Runs public awareness programmes on energy sources
