Chemical Technology Department
Develops policy on chemicals and materials technology, and coordinates research and development in them across Nigeria. Created in 2015 from the former Chemical Technology and Energy Research department.

What the department does
- Develops and reviews policies on chemical, materials, leather, solid minerals and nanotechnology
- Works with ministries, universities, regulators and laboratories on using chemical and materials technologies
- Builds national capacity in producing, storing, supplying and standardising chemicals
- Works with research institutes on indigenous chemical and process technologies
- Coordinates the reduction of persistent organic pollutants, and mercury-free devices
- Develops policies for a National Chemical Bank, a National Toxicology Centre and chemical risk assessment
- Works with the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and the Rotterdam, Stockholm, Basel, Minamata and Bamako conventions
- Supports research for the building, construction, agricultural and petrochemical sectors
Achievements the department lists
- A National Policy on Nanotechnology, prepared for the Federal Executive Council
- A draft National Policy on Chemical Technology, validated by stakeholders in Kano and Akwa Ibom
- Work with the Federal Ministry of Education on teaching chemical safety and security, with a pilot in schools in the North Central zone
- Forums in the South West on the misuse of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive materials
- A consultative forum in Ibadan towards a national policy on dyes and dye products
